I would definitely agree with the use of white space in all sites and don't forget the Golden Ratio or rule of thirds as grid guides, always a useful one when it comes to any kind of design. They also give a website real personality and brand. The most difficult thing is of course coming up with an original idea - and being competent enough to design it! A good example is Mail chimp - it helps you to remember the company name because the first thing you think of is the little chimp in a postman uniform.
