Computer Modern Serif is also a great serif font, especially for print. It is used by LaTeX, after which it gets its fame.

Great list. Thanks so much for pointing out some high quality, free serifs. I feel like all to often I just default to minion when I’m looking for a serif. These will be a great change of pace.

We want more modern serif fonts! The list is pretty nice, but there’s a real lack of good and free modern serif fonts like Rockwell. The only one that comes close, is Museo. :)

@Vishesh – I would separate Rockwell style fonts into slab serif. I wasn’t sure if Museo belonged on this list because it’s a bit of a hybrid between the two. Either way, I was after purely, simple and stylish serif fonts for this list. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the next three categories in this series.

Seriously behind on my RSS feeds lately. I was about 50% on the fonts here already, thanks for the rest.

Also, great to see you got the author comment highlighting up and running. Looks great!

Nice ones. I included Gentium when I blogged about free fonts for book design and layout last year. I can tell from the way you’ve listed, tho’, and I wondered: which are complete families of roman, ital, bold, and bold ital?

The link to Gentium Basic is incorrect though, it’s pointing to the Droid Serif page.
