I found myself going over this article yet again because of how relevant it is. I wanted to also comment on how important it is to follow up with clients, this has gone a long way for me toward impressing them and keeping a professional relationship. It also an action that shows you "valuing the relationship". Never underestimate how important this is.

I agree with the suprise them comment. I think that's really important in any industry, but in the creative markets you have so much more room for suprising any client.

Very nice work up. I like that this was well thought out and to the point. Its advice that designers new and old should follow.

Wonderful article. Many times it is the little things that my clients like. Having them over for dinner, without the business talk is a great way of getting to know your clients. Although you walk a fine line in doing so. You want to remain a clients designer more so than a friend in most cases, but in general it hasn't hurt.

Good reminders. I find that following up with clients and self promotional materials as reminders to be very helpful.

Very nice write up. I couldn't agree more with #2. If you choose to freelance, then you definitely can't be stiff and bureaucratic like agencies.

As old fashioned as it may seem, sending holiday cards via snail mail can show your clients and employees how much you've appreciated their commitment during the past year.

And, if you're on the market for some corporate holiday cards they're running a great deal over at G.Neil. Go to gneil.com/holiday and use keycode Z3666 at checkout to get $50 off your order of 200 cards or more.

Yes, it's August, but you know what they say... Early bird gets the worm!

I find that #5 is especially important. I've seen some great use of holiday cards and random mail check-ins used to get further referrals.
