Someone once said, ‘Style is all that matters.’, and if they didn’t, they should have. Mainly, because it would help make my point a little better, but also because the style applied to a design is one of the most powerful tools of an effective website. People are drawn in by design. Something immediately catches their eye, although it may take time for them to fully appreciate the entire site.

You hear all the time if you are a freelancer, that you are essentially the business. Not only are you all aspects of it, but you are also the face behind it. But how much of that face is actually yours, and how much of it is a sort of compromised professional persona that may not be a fully representative of you?

I was once told an inspirational little nugget of truth that I have clung to since, and allowed its influence to guide me along my path. The saying was told to me by an old manager whom I worked under for only a short time, but whose simple words stuck with me. He said, ‘Good is the enemy of great.’, and the words took a second to wash over me and for me to fully grasp what it was he was saying.

In case you have been living under a rock the past few days, and the rock doesn’t have Wifi access or any trade publications being delivered with any regularity, Apple’s iPad has landed! But the online reception has been far less than stellar, in fact it has aired a little on the cold side.

There is an old saying that rings true, no matter what forum or context it’s applied in. ‘You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.’ We were thinking of this the other day, and how with some minor tweakage the statement could become a powerful statement of affirmation for designers, or at least it could lead us towards this freeing affirmation.

If you haven’t already heard about Seesmic’s recent acquisition of Ping.fm, well then, spoiler alert, they did that. This will inevitably raise the profile of the service provided by Ping.fm, and that got me thinking about this service and any others like it that are out there.
