Missing Media Buttons in WordPress

By   |  Stashed in Webdesign

I went to write a quick post today about Using Zoho Services, but when I went to place an image using the media buttons in WordPress, they were gone.

Other Disappearing Acts

I’ve also recently lost all my Twitter followers and following. Just in case any of my readers have experienced the same thing, they responded to my email inquiry with the following:

Thanks for your email. This is a bug. We’re working on fixing it. Our Team is working around the clock to resolve this matter. Please note that some of the inconsistencies are also related to our recent campaign in eliminating spammers from our system. We’ll be in touch with you when we’ve resolved this issue

You can find more information on GetSatisfaction.com and our Status Blog:

Although it was a relief to know that it was a bug and I’m not alone, I am still frustrated that my Twitter account is all screwed up. Twitter is often over capacity and now this! Maybe it’s time to take a look at Plurk.

Time To Problem Solve

So you can imagine, by now I was quite annoyed at things. After a quick moment of frustration I decided to sit tight, figure out the WordPress bug, and hopefully the Twitter issue will be resolved soon. The first thing I try whenever I’m having this sort of problem is perform a quick Google search to see if anyone else has suffered the same fate. Sure enough, this seems to be a fairly common problem.

I found this article from WordPress Modder. After reading it through, I realized that I had just upgraded to WordPress 2.6 and some of my plugins needed upgrading as well. Something that I’m often too lazy to do. So I went through and clicked on the automatic upgrades.

Well, that was productive, but no luck yet on getting the media buttons to show up. So I began looking for plug-ins that may cause the newer version of WordPress to stumble. It occurred to me that I have recently added some Flickr plug-ins to handle My Ink Blog Flickr Group that I have upcoming. I deactivated a couple of Flickr plug-ins and viola, my buttons were back.

The Bottom Line

Most problems are solvable. In the age we live, most have already happened and help can be found. Search the problem out, be patient and problem solve. If you are missing the WordPress Media Buttons, just upgrade your plug-ins and deactivate them one-by-one until you find the trouble maker.

@tumitu Love the gravatar! Try deactivating and reactivating all the plugins and delete completely the one’s you don’t use at all. Hopefully that works. Also, check out this article, it was really helpful: http://wordpressmodder.org/recovering-from-wp-25-upgrade-problems-162.html
