MyInkTrail – Best of the Web, September 2008

This month has been a complete whirlwind for me. I started my new job yesterday, I’ve relocated 6 hours away, and most of my stuff is still in boxes! Despite all that craziness, here’s my attempt to find the best of what was the month of September. The good news, is the design community continues to push out great work. Here is some of what they did:


1. What’s Your Opinion on Stock Artwork?

GoMedia begins a discussion on the pros and cons of using stock vectors. It’s a tricky topic, and you’ll find designers residing on both sides of the fence.

2. Javascript in Modern Web Design

This is a fantastic resource, that should be bookmarked. The guys at Web Designer Wall put together a huge list of many of the best and most useful Javascript plugins.

3. 10 Things To Expect From Your Logo Designer

David Airey is one of the best and most respected logo designers in the industry. In this article he opens up the discussion from the other side of the fence. What should clients expect out of you?

4. 30 Creative Website Headers

A superb list of 30 creative website headers that are sure to help inspire you!

5. How To Find And Keep A Great Designer

Adelle at Fuel Your Creativity opens up a unique discussion on how to find and keep a great designer from the clients perspective. This article is well written and chocked full of great stuff from Adelle and other awesome designers!


1. Create a Magical Rainbow Color Flame in Photoshop

This is a beautifully designed Photoshop tutorial that will strengthen your knowledge of the pen tool, brushes, gradients and more.

2. The Creativity Wallpaper

Online Photoshop Tutorials is a well-focused newer Photoshop site. The Creativity Wallpaper is a fantastic tutorial, that is definitely worth the time!

3. Awesome Digital Bokeh Effect in Photoshop

Abduzeedo puts together yet another quality tutorial. In this tutorial you’ll learn some cool techniques, while making a slick computer background.

4. How to Make a Delicious Vector Orange in 9 Decisive Steps

A quick and easy to follow Illustrator tutorial that will teach you some nice techniques, and the final result is quite tasty.

5. How to Create a Grunge Web Design in Photoshop

What can I say, I’m a sucker for most grunge designs, and this one is sick!

6. Design an Old-Style Safari Map

I love grunge and old maps, there was no way that I wouldn’t add this tut. Another fantastic job by Tom at PSD Fan!

Sites that are new to me

1. Cool Showcase

Cool Showcase is an awesome social media site for digital artists. Here you can view and share work. The site is well put together and the work is visually stunning.

2. Cardeo Design Blog

This is a new, up-and-coming design blog. It focuses on web design, wordpress themes, vectors and other design related topics.

3. TutSearch

This is a new search site exclusively built for design tutorials. The search results are great, and MyInkBlog is included ;)


1. 106 Delicious Watercolor Illustrator Brushes

Grant from ColorBurned continues to churn out awesome Illustrator resources. This month included a bunch of awesome brushes, including the 106 brushes referenced above and 105 more!

2. Corners and Edges Photoshop Brush Pack

The team at Arbent put together an awesome set of high resolution grunge corner brushes.
